Since 2009, Kulea Villages' work in Tanzania has emphasized education as a powerful tool to help children and their families build a sustainable future.

Tanzania's Education System

Preschool
Preschool and Kindergarten education in Tanzania is not free, and many children are deprived of this essential foundation. Kulea Villages does not often receive referrals to support children at this level of school. Many parents are unaware of the importance of early childhood education for their children, particularly in rural and remote areas in Tanzania.

Primary (Grade 1-7)
Children come to Kulea Villages by referral. We collaborate with the child's caregiver and school to assess support needs and duration. Typically, we provide help for two years or until a family has a stable business income. Although primary school is free, children may not attend due to the cost of uniforms and supplies or the travel distance. An older child may work to support the family.

Secondary (Forms 1, 2, 3 & 4)
After primary school, based on test scores, students move into Secondary Ordinary level for Forms 1, 2, 3, and 4. Most secondary tuition and boarding are government-funded. Admission is contingent upon passing the Primary School Leaving Exam. School quality varies based on student test scores. Costs for uniforms, school fees and supplies, bedding, and sometimes food are paid for by the family. We assist with these costs. Only 33% of children graduate from Secondary school; poverty is often a prime factor.

Secondary (Form 5 & 6)
After Ordinary level, based on test scores, students may move into Secondary Advanced Level school which is necessary for University entry. Only about 4% of all students qualify. Kulea Villages supports children at this level by covering costs for uniforms, school fees, supplies, transportation, and bedding. For graduates, we will try to help them find scholarships for University study.

Vocational Education
We support and encourage students to pursue vocational education for one to two years, an option available after Form 4. In this case, Kulea Villages covers tuition, uniforms and supplies together with the family. We feel it is vital for the family or young adult to contribute a portion of the cost to demonstrate a strong commitment to the program.

Business Startup
Kulea Villages assists many caregivers in building a sustainable business that can support keeping children in school after our support ends. We collaborate with the community and caregivers to identify products and services that are needed and of interest to them. Our training and support ensure a strong foundation. We monitor each business's progress for at least four months to help ensure success.
