Getting Involved
Your donation does more than meet an immediate need. It helps a family in crisis build a more secure future. Whether you are helping provide life-saving formula for a baby, keeping a child in school, or giving a caregiver the opportunity to start a small business, your gift helps families move from severe poverty toward self-sufficiency. Since 2009, we've walked alongside more than 293 families, helping children remain safely with their families while giving caregivers the tools and support they need.
We track progress family by family, starting with an initial home visit to assess needs and develop a plan. In our baby program, social workers record each baby's growth every week. For school-age children, we follow school attendance and progress. For caregivers, we track training (health and business) and business progress through mentoring, in partnership with the community leader. To date, 95% of the families we've worked with have achieved a successful outcome.
That's the whole point of our model! Our goal isn't simply to help families through a crisis. We want to help them build a future where they can provide for themselves.Along with immediate support such as food, baby formula, or school expenses, caregivers receive practical training in health, nutrition, and small-business management. Our local teams provide mentoring and encouragement as families begin earning their own income and work toward self-sufficiency.We consider a family self-sufficient when they can provide nutritious meals, maintain safe housing, and keep their children in school without ongoing financial assistance from Kulea Villages.
Yes. Local hospitals, social workers, school headmasters, and community leaders refer families with the greatest need to us. Registered local not-for-profit organizations run our programs: Kulea Childcare Villages in Tanzania and Kulea Jamii in Kenya, each with its own Country Director, social workers, bookkeepers, and local board. After completing a business plan and a local community market study, our caregivers establish businesses, and local community leaders help mentor and support them. We've learned that extended family is family and that community involvement is essential, so we work to help keep children with their own parent(s), or biological relatives.
