The education system in Kenya has been in transition. The shift includes adding two years of pre-school for all children and splitting Secondary school into Junior and Senior levels.
This transition, began in 2017. The Junior/ Senior level launches in 2026. There are still issues funding and setting up preschools, especially in poor regions.

Kenya's Education System

Pre-Primary (2 years)
Under the old system, preschool and kindergarten education in Kenya were not free, and it is estimated that 25-35% of rural children in the Coastal region lacked access. Kenya’s new system plans for two years of pre-primary school for all children. County governments are required to provide this free pre-primary education, but many rural areas lack the resources to get started. As programs become available, Kulea Villages will work with families to help support uniforms, supplies, and transportation.

Primary (Grades 1-6)
The average completion rate for primary schools in our served area is 74%. Although primary school is free, some children do not attend due to the cost of uniforms, lunch and supplies, or the need to work to support their families. Children are referred to Kulea Villages by headmasters, community social workers and churches or mosques. We then collaborate with the child's caregiver and school to assess the support needed and the duration. Support is typically provided until a caregiver business can be started.

Jr. Secondary (Grades 7-9)
The government funds secondary schools. Jr. Secondary is a foundation stage where learners are accessed and guided into future pathway. Progression is now based on more than exam grades, including also: Competencies, Continuous assessment and the Learner's interests and aptitude.
For most schools tuition and boarding are covered. Expenses for uniforms, school supplies, bedding, and food are the family's responsibility. We assist with these costs. Today, less than 12% of all children in the Coastal Region finish secondary school.

Sr. Secondary (Grades 10-12)
The Senior Secondary School (SSS) phase begins in 2026. This is set up for both University and Careers pathway preparation. Student select from three main pathways:
-
Arts and Sports Science
-
Social Services
-
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Expenses for uniforms, school supplies, bedding, and food are the family's responsibility. We assist with these costs., until a business is started.

College - University
We support and encourage students to pursue further education for one to three years. In this case, Kulea Villages may cover tuition, while families cover transportation and supplies. We feel it is vital for the family or young adult to contribute a portion of the cost to demonstrate a strong commitment.
If a student is looking for a longer STEM University education. We will aid in accessing scholarships for for high-achieving students from poor areas.

Business Startup
Kulea Villages assists caregivers in building a sustainable business that can support keeping children in school after our support ends. We collaborate with local leaders and caregivers to select products and services that are needed locally and of interest to them. Our initial training and support provide a solid basis, while 10 to 14 months of monitoring and encouraging by our social workers help ensure success.
