In East Africa, our goals are to increase infant survival rates, keep children in school, and build self-supporting families.
Families, often led by single mothers facing numerous challenges, are referred to Kulea Villages by government agencies, hospitals, and social workers. We begin by providing social services and crisis support tailored to each family's unique situation.
After addressing immediate needs, we enroll children in one of our programs, such as Maisha Matters for malnourished infants or the Education Sponsorship Program for out-of-school children, pending sponsorships. To promote long-term stability, parents receive training to manage family needs and start a business. We offer startup funds and mentorship, aiming to guide families toward self-sufficiency.

Infant - Maisha Matters
In Tanzania, babies referred are often malnourished or have lost their mothers, making infant formula essential. We provide formula at no cost and address urgent family needs such as food, rent support and medical care. Caregivers also receive weekly preventive health training. Later, we assess caregivers and support those interested in starting a small business.
Families typically are helped in Maisha Matters for 9 to 13 months. The average investment per baby, including crisis support and business startup, is about $1,200 - $1,600 (USD). Funding comes through monthly sponsorships, one-time donations, formula fundraisers, and grants.
Children and Youth -
Education Sponsorship
For school-aged children, our first step is to ensure that they are in school. Together with each family, we cover school-related fees such as meals, uniforms, books, transportation, and supplies. If needed, we also assist with urgent needs at the child's home, such as food, rent support, and medical care. The average annual cost to support a child in Tanzania is $1,200 USD. In Kenya, it is a bit higher at $1,800 per child. This program is primarily funded through shared sponsorships for a specific child. Students are supported for 2 to 4 years.
Caregiver Business
Startup Assistance
After 6 months in the program, we help the child's caregiver start a business that meets community needs and supports the family. This includes training in business basics, savings, and growth planning. A market survey and business plan are necessary for start-up funding. Kulea Villages staff and the community leader (mjumbe) will monitor progress for 4–6 months to ensure success. On average, startup funding ranges from $220 – $300. These businesses provide hope, dignity, and a pathway toward long-term stability for families.
